Above All Things by Tanis Rideout

Above All Things by Tanis RideoutThis debut novel takes us to Mount Everest as explorer George Mallory undertakes his third attempt to reach the summit.  The novel shifts back and forth from Mallory’s expedition and that of his wife Ruth who is attempting to maintain a normal life for their three children.  The depictions of Mallory’s climb up the mountain do a wonderful job of painting the hardship and beautiful that surrounds them, as does the narrative following Ruth’s struggles to understand what drives her husband to such extremes and attempts to deal with her fears as the expedition begins to fail.  This novel is an excellent addition to the growing genre of fictional biography.
