Travels in Siberia by Ian Frazier

Siberia.  The vast, arctic land that stretches for seemingly forever across much of Russia and the former Soviet Union.  It is a land made infamous by the horrendous prison camps where millions of Russians were sent to die during reign of Stalin, but that was not the first time Siberia had be used to house those people the government wanted out of the way.  It was used in a similar way during the time of the Czars.  But there is more to Siberia than just this tragic history, as Ian Frazier artfully demonstrates as he chronicles his travels through the region.  He takes us on a vivid journey that is perfect for any arm chair traveler.
