Love Songs from a Shallow Grave by Colin Cotterill

11/09/2010

This is the latest in the Dr. Siri series.  All of the books are set in 1970’s communist Laos.  The main protagonist is the national corner, Dr. Siri who is in his 70’s.  Even though the governments around him are well corrupt, he still believes in truth and justice.  This spirit often leads him into investigating the cause of death of the bodies that come across his table–sometimes at grave personal danger to himself.  In this installment, there are 3 bodies; all young women killed with a fencing sword.  When an arrest is made, Dr. Siri is on a diplomatic mission in Cambodia where he promptly disappears.  This is a wonderful series for fans of mysteries set in an exotic location, as well as those interested in a first hand look at the post-Vietnam War political landscape in southeast Asia.
