The Fort by Bernard Cornwell

11/04/2010

Bernard Cornwell is one of the masters of historical fiction.  In his latest, Cornwell brings to life the summer 1779 in what is now Maine.  Then part of the Massachusetts colony, a small contingent of British troops and 3 sloops-of-war establish a garrison–the only British presence between New York and Canada.  In response to this the Americans sent an expedition to oust the British.  However, this expedition was doomed to fail.  The British troops were highly trained, well commanded and organized.  The Americans are still rather inexperienced at this point in the conflict and the commanders on this campaign are rather inept.  Cornwell spins a rich tale of all the personality conflicts, battlefield drama and back room dealings.
