The Black Minutes by Martin Solares

10/05/2010

This debut novel from Mexican author Martin Solares takes a hard and serious look at the culture of crime and corruption that plagues our southern neighbor.  In a fictional Mexican city, a young journalist investigating and writing a book about the murders of several young school girls in the 1970s is himself murdered.  As the police investigate the latest murder, they uncover more secrets that someone would kill to keep that way.  The novel flips back and forth from the modern day investigation and the original one in the 1970s.  As it does so, Solares explores the deep corruption of the system, along with the paradoxes of human nature and the evil that often lies just below the surface of people.  A very rich and compelling first novel.
