Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes

Taking 30 years to write, Matterhorn is Karl Marlantes sweeping debut novel on the Vietnam War.  Marlantes is himself a veteran of the conflict having served there as a Marine.  This provided him with a wealth of first hand experience to draw on for this novel.  It features two young soldiers, the oldest is just 22, as they struggle to survive through their respective tours of duty.  They are faced with enemies in the form of North Vietnamese soldiers, illness, nature, and an ineffective bureaucracy at home.  Matterhorn paints a very real and human picture of this difficult conflict from the view point of the very men who were on the front line for it.  Don’t let the length of this work intimidate you; it’s well worth every page.
