Welcome to Utopia by Karen Valby

08/20/2010

Life in the small towns that dot the rural landscape of America is changing rapidly these days.  Karen Valby looks at one such unincorporated town, Utopia, in Texas.  With a population of just 241 Valby is able to quickly get to know most of the residents, but she chooses four to dominate the book.  Ralph, the retired owner of the town’s store who now is king of the morning coffee group; Kathy, a waitress with three of her four sons overseas in the military; Colter, a cowboy’s son; and Kelli, the only black student in the town’s high school who is quickly falling in love with her guitar and out of love with studying.  This is a very intriguing look at how, no matter the distance from the next town, the outside world still finds a way to impact the lives of everyone and their reactions that follow.
