Saturday’s Child by Ray Banks

08/20/2010

This is Ray Banks second novel and the first in the Cal Innes series (now with three titles, all owned by the library).  It introduces PI Cal Innes, fresh from a stint in jail and trying to keep his nose clean.  However, it seems that no matter how hard he tries, past and new troubles will find him.  The local crime boss and Innes former employer, asks him to do one last job–track down the blackjack dealer that disappeared with his 16-year old daughter and lots of money.  The boss’s son, eager to overthrow his dad and shove Innes aside decides to show them both what he’s capable of.  Saturday’s Child is the novel that set up Ray Banks as one of the new masters of hard boiled crime fiction in Britain.  With lots of action, comic moments, and a flawed hero who just can’t seem to catch a break, this is a book (and series) that is well worth the read.
